BRENT RIDGE - NAC CLASSES 03.01.16

Hello All

After addding and adding paint last week – we'll do a bit of subtracting this week.

Thin paint can make soft shapes and if pushed to be soft everywhere can challenge us just as much as adding more paint than we're comfortable with.  So this week we'll look to Helen Frankenthaler and contemporary painters using soft, thin color in their paintings.

Take a look at this collect of SOFT PAINTING and be inspired and challenged to work this way.

Jacqueline Humphries

Victoria Morton

Jackie Soccoccio

Bring a kitchen sponge and a large flat edged tool --- oh yeah, paint and canvas too.
(canvas will allow paint to spread out and soak into the material)
See you next week.

BRENT RIDGE - NAC CLASSES 02.23.16

Hello All,

After our break, we'll move into new territory by employing strategies of overpainting and layers meant to lead to thick surfaces of paint.  Under this pretense, you will want to use a surface that can support such workings such as canvas and board (not paper).  You can use paper to sketch out ideas and support your final work.  This is inspired by Frank Auerbach's style of painting and would start from landscape or figure to form shapes, but his interest is really in the color, shape and movement of the paint; as is the abstract painter working in a non-objective manner.

Bring lot's of paint, something stiff to paint on, and an image to inspire (or some of our figure sketches and collages from earlier).  Oh, and bring your energy!

BRENT RIDGE - NAC CLASSES 02.09.15

Hello All --- Last week was great way to re-interpret our drawings from a model to create all-over abstractions.  The processes were different and varied and it will be great to build on these creations into this week.

You should use your creation to spur new works from these compositions.  I want you to re-translate these into new works.  You can crop to details of works or look at the entire composition for inspirations.  I will ask you to change/invert the color to alter these into new works.

Perhaps you had some undone work/unused drawings and we can use the extra time of this session to keep in this view of constructed abstract paintings.

Here's Franz Kline, he liked to make his paintings from sections of his drawings, blown up to the scale of large paintings and I would like to add his work to DeKooning's for inspiration in this vein:
