BRENT RIDGE - NAC CLASSES 03.02.15

Hello All -

As we develop our personal visions through painting I want to emphasize how sketching is so very useful to process a beginning, direction or composition.  It allows us to be carefree and experimental with our material, and when it comes to Abstraction, it helps make it something we can believe in once we've invested ourselves in the development of the shapes we are using.

I am going to use my own process here as an example of how beginnings can be developed through sketches and realized into larger pieces.  I make mixed-media collages out of paint, colored paper and printed off photographs as one way of working and here are two of these collages.  I don't think too hard about them and make quite a few and select ones that I think I can play with on a bigger scale.  I will give you some mystery to the outcome and bring the two resulting paintings with me – and you can ask questions about the process and determine how this might apply to your own paintings and process.  See you in class.

BRENT RIDGE - NAC CLASSES 02.23.15

Hello all,
Last week was an awesome start to our class, and hopefully the big snow is now behind us as last!

This week we want to continue our journeys and start to work through our abstract processes.

I want to emphasize painting images with layers.  It will help build interesting surfaces and make new surprises for you in your discoveries through painting – you can use images if you like or work with the line, circle and squiggle to form a composition strategy.  One thing I want to emphasize is we want to take these works through a process of transformation - and that means to listen to the painting and let go of predetermined ideas.  Bring more than one surface to work on at a time, and at least one of a bigger size like 18" x 24".  You want some surface to explore (canvas, paper, board or found).

I want to introduce you to Thomas Nozkowski, he is a pioneer of the contemporary movement of process painting.  He works on paintings through many layers to develop his works using fragments of many things, among them geometric shapes, landscape formats and figurative fragments.  Enjoy.

BRENT RIDGE - NAC CLASSES 02.08.15

SOMETHING OLD AND SOMETHING NEW AND SOMETHING BORROWED

Welcome everyone - its a new session of Painting at the NAC and what I would like is for you to bring something Old and something New and something Borrowed.

That Old thing could be any kind of painting you've made in the past to show off or to rework (it will help us get to know each other and what we like and how we work).

That New thing could be a blank surface of any kind - canvas, paper, cardboard - preferably something you feel you can experiment with and not feel precious about and good sized (at least 20 x 16 IN or so).

That Borrowed thing is your inspiration - it can be a physical object if you like to paint from life, or a photograph or something more abstract like a color swatch - don't think about this too much, it should only be something that seems interesting to you.

Bring with you your favorite painting materials to begin our journey –
and we'll go over the materials list for the rest of the class.

See you Monday, Brent
