PATCHWORK Group Show this Weekend, coinciding with Glasgow International

CENTER FOR 21ST CENTURY STUDIES is hosting a group exhibition of visual artists from the Glasgow School of Art MFA program.  The exhibition is titled PATCHWORK. The theme is in relation to this term because of its implication of multiple registers, fragmentary viewing, or multiple materials cobbled together to form an impurity of surface.  The show will include works of painting and drawing.

Artists: Hyojun Hyun, AlexanderOleksyn, Benjamin Rankin, Brent Ridge

Knuckle Sandwich

This baby is finally done.  I've spent one whole term plus my break finishing this (plus other similarly sized paintings).  This work has taken probably more turns than any painting of mine that I can recall.  There has been wholesale revisions of it as a work, and that essence of its journey has been translated into its final image.  I like that its a beat-up thing, its just a touch rocky, ya know?  Rest in peace you bastard!

Sneak Peek

That's a biggie almost done.  55 x 55 inches of paint plus stuff.
A touch of spray paint here and there was added after this picture
was taken, so this is a "in process" doc shot for my audience.
I'm out.  I've got a lot more to make at this point.

My Collection, Cathy Nan Quinlan

Fantastic virtual exhibition from my friend and colleague.  Definitely worth checking out for the connections she draws from the work of those she has known and collected over the years.

New Day, New Work

Although not finished, as evidenced by the border on the image, this is one of three new pictures made in the last week that I consider a development.  They are made on cardboard, and the change of support for this smaller scale painting size works for a myriad of reasons.

Not-so-abstract art

People who scoff that a child could have painted a splotchy, abstract piece of modern art see more in such creations than they realize. When forced to choose a favorite between a painting by a child, chimp or other animal and one by an abstract expressionist artist, people untrained in art usually picked the professional’s creation, even if it was mislabeled as that of a child or a non-human animal, say psychologists Angelina Hawley-Dolan of Boston College and Ellen Winner of Harvard University. People intuitively discern goals or intentions in artists’ abstract paintings, the researchers propose in an upcoming Psychological Science. —Bruce Bower
