Although not finished, as evidenced by the border on the image, this is one of three new pictures made in the last week that I consider a development. They are made on cardboard, and the change of support for this smaller scale painting size works for a myriad of reasons.

Not-so-abstract art

People who scoff that a child could have painted a splotchy, abstract piece of modern art see more in such creations than they realize. When forced to choose a favorite between a painting by a child, chimp or other animal and one by an abstract expressionist artist, people untrained in art usually picked the professional’s creation, even if it was mislabeled as that of a child or a non-human animal, say psychologists Angelina Hawley-Dolan of Boston College and Ellen Winner of Harvard University. People intuitively discern goals or intentions in artists’ abstract paintings, the researchers propose in an upcoming Psychological Science. —Bruce Bower

Studio Happenings in November

We've been busy, after a trip to Paris over Halloween, its been work, work, work. The studio got a high shelf to help clear the way.

Now I made big stretchers just aching to get some canvas on and strap some image games to their fabric. Eh? Maybe after tomorrow's big tutorials.

Every day, things get turned inside out. The clutter starts to fall away, and clearer pictures appear. We can hope.

My new home for this year in the MFA, the JD Kelly building.
One of the bonuses of being in this building, is it is at the top of Garnet Hill, the tallest point in Glasgow. It also houses the printmaking department, making something in silkscreen ultra convenient!

My new studio window. I keep getting these great windows with a view.
I think their trying to set me up for distraction. It is nice to have, and I like that
it's a smaller slice of the wall, keeping more focus on the work.

Perspective: GSA Style

At the top of the Macintosh, there lies spaces designed to study the landscape. These cubies with arches have large windows to study from a bird's perspective what lies beneath, outward and upward.

Our vision is obstructed to the variable of construction scaffolding that is temporarily in place on the building's exterior. The Windows were made using the small square panes that are useful for perspective, to relate the grid of the window to the grid of your drawing.

Meanwhile we look through the imposed structure to what lies out there.

The light changes, a temporal constant, like the changing city beneath.

Not unlike the temporal structure imposed on our view, a purposeful layering of the complexity of the landscape, upholding, protecting, imposing changing thing.

What have you been waiting for, my new friends? I made you over the summer its time to shine a bit of light onto your existence. My time of my hibernation is over, and there comes a time to be more open, now that our presentations are done with and my 2nd year is now started. I am exited about what will happen this year with my work, and this is one way of me showing it. I will expand upon my process concerning the work in these spaces along with recording random Scottishness as per usual. I am happy that I have made discoveries in technique and content and managed to keep my underling structure consistent in this new work.

Looking back at the recordings of my first year has given me a chance to breath perspective on how my setting has influenced my practice, and consequentially influenced my performance during my first year. It's like looking at what I was looking at through someone else's eyes. Here a fragment of my studio before I made mess all over it.

The Dirty Dirty and "Off the Hook! : The Telephone Project"!

Through this project, modeled after the game "telephone," each artist responded to another artist's work by creating a new work that was then passed on to another artist who responded to the previous piece by creating a new work that was then passed on to another artist, and so on, and so on...

The resulting lineage of completed works presents a variety of writings, drawings, paintings, sculptures, collages, mobiles, and photographs that more or less draw from the same inspiration, but the process of translating from one work to another creates an ever-evolving statement.

Comedian Billy Connolly's famous banana boots, now on display in the People's Palace

Billy Connolly was born in Anderston in 1942, but moved to Partick at the age of five to live with two of his aunts. He performed on stage with his banjo and ad-libbed Glasgow patter as an amateur and then was a founder member of the folk group the Humblebums.

In 1975 Connolly had a hit with the comedy single D.I.V.O.R.C.E.. That same year the documentary Big Banana Feet was filmed, taking its title from the outrageous banana boots in which he often performed, and he became famous throughout the UK.

Here I am, starting my studies at GSA last September and at that point, my studio is fresh and almost bare. It's an honest, but slightly redundant sentiment I expressed in clay before me. The night's skyline is seen through the window with the reflection of my painting I dragged with me from Brooklyn visible all at the same time. It feels strange to look at this image now, knowing what I felt then and what I feel now, a struggle that ensued over the past year to understand my art, and a new definition of what it means to be me.

A World of Changing Light, Briefly

This picture was taken last spring, before the leaves came out. We encountered this bubble creature on our path through the park. It makes a distortion of the trees, a micro world of light and a membrane of soap, and it stops you, moving you to observe its completeness, if only briefly.

Building With Myth

At this point, this blog will be both retrospective and current, mixing my experiences of the past year with what I've been doing this summer. These are rock formations found at the summit of Beallach na Ba (The Pass of the Cattle) located in the Applecross peninsula of the Scottish Highlands. It is reached by taking a narrow one lane road from Loch Kishorn rising from sea level to a summit of 2100. I am still unsure of distinct reasons behind the stacking the rocks. I think we can all feel the spiritual desire that results in such a totem. I am intrigued by the mystery that lies behind their individual stories, and somehow they just feel right in a place so far from your typical walk in life. You can see as far as the Isle of Skye from this place, and that is about as mythic as it gets in being inspired by landscape.

A New Start

I am posting for the first time, and imprinting a picture of the doors to my school. It certainly represents the starting point of my experience living and breathing Europe from the vantage point of Glasgow.
